Family organization update.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post attempting to create a unified Google Calendar that Robin and I can share and sync over the air on our mobile devices.

After coming up with a solution, I THINK it’s mostly working, but it’s not without its bugs. Here’s a cocktail napkin diagram of how I came up with the whole thing:

As you can see, I broke down and bought Goosync for Robin’s Palm Centro. I’d say it’s not worth the money, but since it has no competition I have nothing to buy in its place, so therefore neither do you if you have a Palm-based Treo or Centro.

I used iCal 3.0 (included with Leopard) to enter all the information initially into Google Calendar and am keeping it synced there as well.

Finally, I’m using Google’s sync tool for BlackBerry to get the calendar data over to my BB Pearl which then in turn syncs to the company Exchange server and therefore Entourage on my work computer.

Now, as I said, this whole set up is not without its bugs. At the moment, Goosync won’t sync events entered on Robin’s Centro back to the central calendar. She’s tagging them the way the instructions say that she should. No luck.

Secondly, I’ve noticed a couple of work events disappearing on my Exchange calendar. I’ve been experiencing a little bit of that before starting this experiment anyway, so I don’t know if Google’s sync app is the culprit at this point or not. It shouldn’t be because I don’t have my default calendar set to sync with Google.

In summary, it’s not perfect but it has to work for now. I’m going to continue to search for a better Palm application (Google, care to write one?) and eventually I’ll be needing to figure out how to sync Google Calendar to an iPhone on my end. As always, if you have tips or have figured ways to improve upon this solution, please share in the comments.
