Layovers. I love ‘em.

I saw this tweet from Merlin Mann this morning and it got me thinking about airports (obviously). While I can certainly relate to this tweet and the couple of tweets following it that detailed some of the more annoying people that one typically finds on any travel day, it also brought forth a self-confession:

I love airport layovers.

And really, the longer the better. Even on days that I have somewhere fairly pressing to be. In fact, I’ll even go so far as to say especially on the days that I have somewhere fairly pressing to be. Why? Because layover time is the airlines’ way of saying, “Relax. Have a drink. People watch. We insist.”

Layover time is a time that you really have no other choice than to sit and relax. Even if you whip out a laptop or mobile device and check email or do some work, you’re forced to go into a mode that you probably don’t give yourself the luxury of going into very often.

I love to people watch. I love to check out the airport terminals and see what they’re like. I’m not travel n00b, but there are enough airports that I haven’t been to that I’m still interested in exploring if I’m able. And of course, I’m interested in trying to get some footage for a new episode of THE COCKTAIL NAPKIN if I’ve got a good enough idea.

I love layovers. There, I’ve said it. I feel so much better.
