RSS Cobwebs

I’ve noticed something over the past couple of weeks when I check in on all the RSS feeds I subscribe to. A vast majority of them are beginning to grind to a halt. The volume of posts that I have to keep up with is continually diminishing. The exception to this rule is Engadget, which will probably post a hundred posts a day until the Apocalypse.

So, I asked this question last July, but I’ll ask it again. Are blogs dying?

No. As long as people have opinions they'll continue to right them in blog form. Now, maybe the quick hit of Twitter has taken a little bit of its luster but I couldn't see blogs ever going away. I do, however, think that most of them have a pretty short life span.

One thing I've been pondering lately is how much we're all drowning in the web of social sites. There's too much. It's killing all of us. It's too much for us to take.
  • I've been contemplating the drowning as well. In fact I'm mulling around a blog post regarding just that.

Absolutely. I have been on Twitter for maybe three months and I'm already pretty much sick of it. I'm in marketing and I'm very interested in online 'stuff' and yet, I'm sick of it and its overwhelming. I can only imagine how the average person feels. Once in a while it feels like we marketers (or agency people) are the only ones on these sites.

I say no - the blogs I follow (some advertising industry, lots of cars/sports, and others like Lifehacker and Consumerist, all seem to be posting as much as ever and I follow them as much as I ever did. I can see personal blogs falling off significantly though, with Twitter and Facebook able to handle a lot of that.

P.S. Tried to use the Facebook Connect and got an error message (using Vista with Firefox)
  • You made a very important distinction here... personal blogging is what I was thinking about but didn't articulate very well.

However, it's not just personal blogs in my feed reader that are fading into nothing. Some of the larger blogs I read are tapering off as well.

As for the Facebook Connect, I tried it on Safari and got an error message that leads me to believe I might know what the problem is. I'll look into it.
