No WWW, please.

Seth’s comment in the previous post brings up what has increasingly become a pet peeve of mine over the past year. I have a problem with sites that are broken when one leaves the “www” prefix off a URL.

After all, the URL is being entered in a web browser, so there’s an overwhelming chance that the user is requesting HTTP traffic on port 80. The http:// or ftp:// designations easily determine that anyway.

From a marketing standpoint, it’s a lot easier to copywrite when you don’t have to throw that pesky “www” in there. Don’t know if you’ve ever noticed, but those three letters waste a pretty precious chunk of time in an announcer’s read. It also clutters up screen real estate on a broadcast super.

So, I think it should go without saying that any sysadmin worth his pocket protector should be redirecting raw domain calls to www. For more information, visit no-www.org.
