Recalling your user-generated content

I’ve been spending some time lately putting ground floor touches on a personal project that will encompass quite a bit of user-generated content. Really, the past year I’ve made my living thinking about user-generated content if I really wanted to get technical.

This got me to thinking about all those things in the past decade or so that could have been classified as UGC before the term and “phenomenon” was so cool. More specifically, it got me to thinking about what the first piece of content that I ever contributed to the big ether cloud known as the Internet was.

wakko.gifI believe that my first piece of uploaded media was done around April or May of 1994 and it was a picture I created in Microsoft Paintbrush of Wakko from the animated TV series Animaniacs. The picture to the left is not that picture, but it certainly looks very similar to what I drew pixel by pixel with my mouse.

I also remember that I uploaded it using the 14.4kbps modem that I bought that day. I had just moved out of the dorms and into my ex-fiancee’s apartment and therefore lost the 9600 baud modems that were available in the dorms at Oklahoma State. Talk about progress.

What was the first piece of content you created for the Internet? If you have it, can we see it?
