Hello TiVo #2!
Robin and I were killing time at Circuit City last night after supper, and while I was suffering from the disappointment that they didn’t have Katamari Damacy in stock for the PS2, Robin summoned me quickly to the home electronics aisle.
There, sitting in all its glory, was a Series 2 TiVo for $199.99… with $200.00 in combined mail-in rebates. For those who are slow at math – Basically in the end, you’re being PAID to take a TiVo.
I love my Series 1 TiVo. I’ve had it for 3 years now, and it’s served me well. I modded it to include the built-in Ethernet and put TyTool on it to pull the recorded shows off for later burning to VCD… although I haven’t really done that in a year or two since the process takes too long, especially when you like to edit the commercials out like I do.
With the Series 2 though, you’ve got the TiVoToGo service, which sounds interesting in theory plus the ability to view your photos and listen to your MP3′s on it.
Needless to say, the Series 1 got unplugged last night and the rebates stuffed in the mail while a new Series 2 TiVo sits under the TV with an alluring white glow coming from behind the little TiVo guy. We named it “”Sapphire”", since all computing devices in our house are named after some sort of gin… keeping with the 3rdMARTINI theme.
After the v7.1 update to the TiVo OS gets downloaded on it, I’ll be adding a USB 802.11 wireless adapter so I can hook it to my home network and have the ability to burn shows to DVD as well as serve my photos and music to the box in the living room.
The point of this post is… if you have considered getting a TiVo at all, and you have the ability to do without $200.00 for about 10 weeks, RUN to your nearest Circuit City and pick one up.
Oh, and before you ask, my dad is going to inherit my Series 1, so no, it’s not for sale.
